| This is a rare moment: Donna on the other side of the camera! |
Donna loves walking on the beach and collecting shells on Sanibel Island in southwest Florida. Given that she lives in New York, she doesn’t get to do that too often. (But she vows that it will be a regular activity for her when she someday retires to the Sunshine State.) As a fifth-generation horticulturist, Donna’s life has always been about all-things-gardening. As a toddler, she enjoyed digging in the garden with her mother’s tablespoons. Today, she still cherishes and uses the pruning shears her dad bought for her when she turned 18. And if her formative years weren’t horticultural-based enough, she’s been married to a horticulturist for 29 years. So it’s fair to say her passions and career are driven by her love of all growing things. Donna has had many years of formal and informal studies and training in the growing field. She attended Cornell University, earning a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, followed by a master’s in Environmental Education from SUNY Stony Brook. Her “real” learning years, though, she says, were the 22 she spent as a county agent with Cornell Cooperative Extension. Her program areas there covered consumer and commercial horticulture, including the Master Gardener program, garden retailer training and the plant diagnostic lab. She’s been a garden writer for extension publications and the Internet for 25 years. In addition, she enjoys garden photography and illustrates her articles with beautiful digital images she’s taken throughout her travels. Among all she’s done in the growing industry, some of Donna’s greatest pleasures come from the volunteer work she does as a board member for New York’s garden retail, nursery and landscape industries. She loves meeting new people and learning about their work and interests. “I guess you could say I’m a plants and people person!” she says.

- “I’ve never met a spring-flowering bulb that I didn’t love. Of course, I’m also passionate about amaryllis, mandevilla, stewartias… I guess you could say I love just about all plants!”
