Plant sales tend to offer uncommon varieties not usually found at garden centers.
In Portland, OR, April is the month for great plant sales. There’s usually a different sale every weekend, and this year is no exception. Although most sales are sponsored by a private entity, all are open to the public. One of the things I enjoy most at these sales is talking with the vendors, who bring lots of great information, as well as great plants.

The sales typically focus on uncommon and hard-to-find plants. I went on a “blue” streak last year and bought several blue-flowering penstemons, Scilla peruviana, the vining Cobaea scandens, Camassia leichlinii and Gentiana asclepiadea. (In case you’re not familiar with these, they all have blue or purple flowers.) If you’re looking for something special like alpines or Pacific Northwest natives, you’ll find it at a plant sale!

I found cup-and-saucer vine (Cobaea scandens) at a local plant sale.
We’ve got two more weeks of great plant-buying opportunities this month – don’t miss out!

Saturday, April 19th: The Leach Botanical Garden sale runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be held at Floyd Light Middle School at SE 108th and Washington Streets, near Mall 205. There will be over 20 vendors there, as well as plants propagated from the Leach Garden. Admission is free. For more information, contact Kate at (503) 761-4751.

Saturday, April 26th: The Berry Botanic Garden (BBG) plant sale will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with over 20 vendors. The event is located at Montgomery Park, 2701 NW Vaughn St. Members of the BBG can begin shopping at 10 a.m., and they receive a 10 percent discount anytime during the sale. Admission is free. For more information, call the BBG at (503) 636-4112, ext. 102, e-mail bbg@berrybot.org, or visit Web www.berrybot.org.

Warnings
  • Many of the plants available at these sales are so unusual, there’s little information available on how to grow them. Before you take your cool plants home to your garden, be sure to get the care instructions from the vendor!
Tips
  • To help keep track of the plants in your garden, prepare a spreadsheet with plant names, sources and planting locations. That way, you’ll know who has the best plants for when you go to the next sale.
Facts
  • Membership has its privileges. If you belong to a botanic garden or plant society that’s involved in a plant event, you can likely look forward to a few sale perks, including early shopping opportunities and discounts.
