Let’s think outside of the box – the window box, as the case may be. Yes, planting in containers is a hot gardening trend. Not only does it take some of the backbreaking work out of digging in the dirt, it’s a fun way to highlight special areas of your garden and keep heads turning. But don’t relegate your containers to your front stoop or window planters. Check out some of these containers for a little inspiration. Maybe next season you’ll try something out of the ordinary – and extraordinary!
- Hanging baskets stuffed with plants that trail, like sweet potato vine, can be easily moved around a landscape to keep things interesting.
- Let containers bursting with color transition the area between a patio and garden.
- Go for a big welcome by using multiple containers on both sides of a door or entryway to make your home even more inviting!
- Raise the level of attention you get with your water pond by putting some containers on a pedestal.
- Make a bold statement with a big container. (But just like any other pot – make sure there are drainage holes!)

- Create the effect of a landscape bed right on your patio or open yard by massing pots and plants the way you would in the garden. (And you can change the look presto-quick by just moving the pots around.)
- Make windows and doors “pop” by filling window boxes with colorful plants.
- Use one type of plant, like these mums, in a repeating container for a simple but brilliant planting!
- Want something off-the-wall crazy? Try putting your containers on a wall! It saves floor space and brings to life an otherwise boring side of your home.
