Filoli is a tremendous example of an early 20th century country estate. Located in Woodside, CA, the 654-acre property has 16 acres of formal gardens surrounding the historic house, which was completed in 1917. In 1975, the private estate was donated to the National Trust for Historic Preservation for all to enjoy.
The gardens were designed at the same time the house was constructed. Inspired by European influences, there are a succession of garden rooms along a north-south axis, with parterres, terraces, pools and lawns. Isabella Worn supervised the planting of the gardens and incorporated numerous camellias, rhododendrons, roses and magnolias, as well as many other colorful, artistic touches. She was later awarded several honors for her work, including the Distinguished Service Medal of the Garden Club of America. The gardens are currently maintained by 14 full-time horticulturists, student interns and over 100 garden volunteers.
