(Scarlet Sage, Vista Purple Sage)
This is a purple-flowered cultivar of Salvia splendens, a tender perennial evergreen sage native to Brazil known as Scarlet sage. Not hardy, it is grown in the garden as an annual for continuous bloom from purple flowers massed on leafy, upright stalks above a clump of green, toothy leaves. Flowering can start as early as late spring and run to late fall, unchecked by the heat of summer. Prompt removal of spent flower stalks prolongs flowering.
