Few gardeners would consider planting a bigleaf hydrangea foremost for its foliage. The glossy green leaves of 'Variegata' are edged in white. In summer it produces flat, lacecap flower clusters on branch tips. In cluster centers are many tiny pink to lavender or pale blue fertile flowers. White, large-sepaled sterile flowers line the outside of the cluster. The intensity and clarity of flower color varies on soil quality and pH. The dried flowers and fruits are an attractive beige to sandy brown.
