(Gulf Stream Nandina, Heavenly Bamboo, Sacred Bamboo)
Heavenly Bamboo is an upright shrub that is native to China and Japan. It is likened to true bamboo in habit and appearance, but is not related at all, in fact, it is actually related to the barberries.
Nandina grows in a clump of thin, cane-like stems that slowly sucker at the base forming colonies. They bear sprays of white flowers in summer and round clusters of red berries in winter. Heavenly Bamboo plants are often either male or female, therefore both are needed for berries to develop (self-fertile...

(Heavenly Bamboo, Moon Bay Heavenly Bamboo)
Heavenly Bamboo is an upright shrub that is native to China and Japan. It is likened to bamboo in habit and appearance, but is not a true bamboo. Nandina ‘Moon Bay’ is a compact cultivar with an upright, globular form which branches freely to produce dense plants. The new leaves emerge yellow green and mature to medium green. The fall color is red to orange and is more intense in colder weather. Moon Bay doesn’t appear to spread readily by rhizome (underground stem) making for a neat, contained clump....

The airy compound leaves are purple-red when young and brilliant red in fall and winter, often with orange highlights. The foliage and stiff upright stems suggest those of bamboo,...

(Dwarf Nandina, Heavenly Bamboo, Sacred Bamboo)
Not a bamboo at all but rather a member of the barberry family, this upright evergreen shrub is native to China and Japan. Named for its dwarf habit and purple young foliage, the cultivar 'Nana Purpurea' forms a low slowly suckering clump of thin, cane-like stems clad with compound leaves. The leaves turn reddish tints in winter. It rarely if ever flowers.
Heavenly bamboo grows best in full to partial sun and well-drained soil. Traditionally planted in Buddhist temple gardens, in it used nowadays...
(Heavenly Bamboo, Orhime Heavenly Bamboo)
A medium-sized tender evergreen shrub often planted near temples in its native China and Japan, heavenly bamboo is prized by gardeners worldwide for its colorful lacy leaves. Resembling an asparagus fern more than a nandina, the dwarf cultivar 'Orhime' bears leaflets that are narrowed to almost needle-like proportions. The foliage is purple-red when young and again in fall and winter, often with yellow highlights. This cultivar may not be as hardy as most other forms.

(Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo, Heavenly Bamboo)
A medium-sized tender evergreen shrub often planted near temples in its native China and Japan, heavenly bamboo is prized by gardeners worldwide for its colorful lacy leaves and attractive flower and fruit. The cultivar 'Pygmaea' offers most of these virtues at half the size. The airy compound leaves are reddish-purple when young and again in fall and winter. The foliage and stiff upright stems suggest those of bamboo, particularly when pruned in the Asian fashion with the lower leaves thinned to...
