General Description

Irregular branching and a smaller mature size are hallmarks of the dwarf white fir cultivar 'Compacta'. It produces attractively colored needles that are light seafoam to blue-green. White fir is a pyramidal evergreen tree native to the western United States, but this selection remains more of a shrub to small tree. Its cones are oblong and held upright on mature branches, occurring only after several decades of growth. Always slow growing, 'Compacta' is densely branched and needled. When young its a rounded shrub but after 40 to 60 years, evolves into a more upright, pyramidal silhouette.

White fir grows best in full sun, slightly acidic, well-drained soil that is evenly moist and enriched with organic matter. This species of fir is more heat-, drought- and pollution-tolerant than other firs. In the landscape this dwarf white fir may be incorporated into a mixed shrub border, foundation planting or as a small accent jutting up from the lawn.
