General Description

Look through the evergreen boughs of Marie's fir to see the ghostly white bark that often is blushed with purple hues. This conifer is a subalpine species native to the mid- and high elevations of the central Japanese island of Honshu. Although a pyramid when young, Marie's fir becomes more oval or flat-topped in silhouette at maturity. The bark is pale gray or brown with a powdery covering known as bloom, occasionally touched with hints of purple. Large, old trees display the ghostly white bole.

Young branchlets are fuzzy and brown to reddish gray. The rich green needles occur densely and overlap on the upper sides of the branches. Needles are grooved and have a yellowish white underside. Female cones are elliptical with a flattened top, first dark blue and then maturing deep blackish sienna.

Marie's fir grows in conditions much like that of the Pacific silver fir: cool, moist and humid summers and cold winters with lots of snow. A well-drained acidic to neutral soil is best, although a lightly alkaline soil is tolerated if the soil is naturally fertile and enriched with organic matter. Grow this unique Japanese native conifer in a sunny garden location as a specimen.
