General Description

Flowering maple is an ever-blooming shrub that bears many large, showy, hibiscus-like flowers. The hybrid cultivar ‘Nabob’ has an upright to spreading habit and very large nodding crimson flowers. Its robust, maple-like leaves are evergreen to semi-evergreen, lightly fuzzy and rich green.

This tough plant grows best in sites with partial sun and rich, well-drained soil with even moisture. In its northernmost range, it may die back to the ground much like an herbaceous perennial. In these conditions, it is best not to prune back its dead stems until early spring. This helps it better establish itself the following spring. In the far north, it can be planted as a tender perennial or houseplant. Where hardy, it is best planted in a large informal hedge, as a foundation plant or in a shrub border.
