Family

Malvaceae

Botanical Name

ABUTILON 'Vesuvius Red'

Plant Common Name

Chinese Lantern, Flowering Maple, Parlour Maple, Vesuvius Red Flowering Maple

General Description

Flowering maple is an ever-blooming shrub that bears many showy, hibiscus-like flowers. The hybrid ‘Vesuvius Red’ has pendulous flowers with a maroon calyces which surround red-petaled flowers with peach venation and edges. Its maple-like leaves are evergreen to semi-evergreen, lightly fuzzy and deep green.

This easy to cultivate plant grows best in sites with partial sun and rich, well-drained soil with even moisture. In its northernmost range, it may die back to the ground much like an herbaceous perennial. In these conditions, it is best not to prune back its dead stems until early spring. This helps it better establish itself. In the far north, it can be planted as a tender perennial or houseplant and looks especially nice in hanging baskets. Where hardy, it is best planted as a foundation plant or in a shrub border.
