General Description

Offering color at all seasons, this small shrubby deciduous tree is native to moist mountainous regions of central and southern Japan. Erect, many-branched, and bushy, it bears oval, glossy, bluish green leaves that typically have red stems, purplish undersides, and two small side lobes. The leaves turn yellow in fall, sometimes deepening to orange or maroon. The trunk and older branches are dull green with purple and gray striations. Younger branches are purple-red or green. Dainty clusters of small pale yellow flowers in spring give rise to bunches of winged red-brown fruits that are often borne in striking profusion and that remain decorative most of summer.

This lovely and underused tree likes moist, well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil and partial shade. Plant it in a woodland edge or as an understory tree, preferably where its colorful bark, fruits, flowers, and leaves can be seen and appreciated at close hand. The cultivar 'Vetchii' has pink- and white-splotched leaves.
