Manchurian Maple
General Description
A beautiful but rarely grown maple, this large shrub or small tree from eastern Asia has three-parted leaves that are smooth, unlike those of the similar Nikko maple. Often multi-trunked and low-branched with a broad rounded crown, it is usually one of the first maples to come into growth in spring. The shiny dark green leaves are also early to color in fall, turning brilliant shades of red while most other maple are still green. The handsome pale brown bark offers winter interest. Inconspicuous yellow-green flowers appear in May, giving rise to two-winged fruits that mature from green to brown.
This lovely tree likes well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil and sun or light shade. Plant it in a woodland edge or as a lawn or understory tree, preferably where its attractive bark can be seen and appreciated at close hand.
