ACER palmatum 'Beni-shichehenge'
Beni-shichihenge Japanese Maple, Japanese Maple
The beautiful and ubiquitous Japanese maple is a small deciduous tree native to eastern Asia. A dwarf, shrubby cultivar grown for its variegated leaves, 'Beni-shichihenge' has deeply five-lobed, blue-green leaves with salmon-pink margins that fade to pinkish white. The lobes are often twisted and curled. Fall color is yellow. Clusters of red flowers dangle from the branches in spring, followed by small green two-winged fruits that mature to red-brown. Smooth gray bark provides winter interest.
This maple does best in moist, humus-rich soil and sun to part shade. Plant it near a walk or entryway, where its elegant foliage can be fully appreciated. It also works well as a bonsai plant.
