ACER palmatum 'Red Pygmy'
Japanese Maple, Red Pygmy Japanese Maple
Japanese maple is a small deciduous tree native to eastern Asia. The dwarf cultivar 'Red Pygmy' features palmate (hand-shaped) leaves that are divided into very long, narrow, pointed lobes. The leaves emerge deep red in spring, mature to greenish red in summer, and finally turn golden-yellow in fall. It has an upright habit resembling a vase. The gray bark is attractive throughout the year.
For most effective growth this maple prefers a semi-moist, acidic soil and sun to part shade. It works well as a feature plant for the garden, in containers, and for bonsai. Although a dwarf, over decades this plant will eventually form a small tree.
