Aceraceae
Acer palmatum 'Sango-Kaku'
Japanese Maple, Sango-kaku Japanese Maple
The beautiful and ubiquitous Japanese maple is a small deciduous tree native to eastern Asia. Its cultivar 'Sango-kaku' (commonly known as coralbark maple) features bark that is bright coral-red on new growth, becoming duller as the branches age. The small, palmate (hand-shaped) leaves emerge pale green, deepen in color in summer, and turn yellow in fall. The bark is ornamental year round, especially in winter. The habit is upright.
For most effective growth this maple prefers a moist, humus-rich soil and sun to part shade. 'Sango-kaku' works well as a specimen plant, in containers, or for bonsai.
