ACER palmatum 'Orangeola'

James Burghardt

Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER palmatum var. dissectum 'Orangeola'

Plant Common Name

Dissected Japanese Maple, Orangeola Dissected Japanese Maple

General Description

The unusually bright, colorful foliage of 'Orangeola' set it apart from other dissected Japanese maples. Asian in origin, this small, deciduous tree sports arching branches that give it a broad, mounded appearance. Leaf color is orange-red in spring, turns dark green to burgundy-red in summer and then reverts back to bright orange-red in the fall.

This adaptable tree prefers sites with rich, well-drained soil and part sun to shade. Some self-sow with efficacy, but this should not dissuade anyone from growing them. Japanese maple is versatile in the landscape and may be grown as a feature plant, in a mixed border or trained for bonsai.
