Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER pictum ssp. mono

Plant Common Name

Painted Maple

General Description

This form of the painted maple is a handsome deciduous shade tree from China, Korea and Japan, locations much further east than the species. It becomes a V-shaped tree with a lovely rounded canopy. Its leaves are bluntly triangle-lobed, almost heart-shaped at the base, somewhat resembling the leaves of a tulip poplar (Liriodendron). Moreover, its larger leaves have smaller lobes on the usual lobes. Small, upright yellow-green flowers adorn the branches before the bronzed new leaves unfurl in early spring. In the autumn, the leaves turn gold and yellow with edges and splotches of red.

Plant painted maple in full sun in a wide variety of soils, acidic to mildly alkaline, except in very wet locations. This tree makes a particularly attractive canopy, and should be placed in a spacious lawn or position that allows full growth without crowding, such as in a park, campus, or cemetery.
