Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
ACER platanoides 'Drummondii'
Drummond's Norway Maple, Harlequin Norway Maple, Norway Maple
Norway maple is a fast-growing deciduous shade tree native to Europe but naturalized in the United States and other areas. The leaves of the cultivar 'Drummondii' are dramatically outlined with a creamy-white margin. Its dense, rounded crown is relatively compact. The clustered yellow-green flowers – which are more abundant and conspicuous than those of many maples – are followed by winged brown seeds.
Norway maple is very tolerant of a wide range of sites and conditions but does best in locations with full sun to part shade and well-drained average soil. Its dense shade and roots and its penchant for prolific self-sowing make it a poor choice for gardens and natural areas. Prune out any shoots that produce pure green leaves. This relatively cold-tender cultivar requires shelter from icy winter winds.
