Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
ACER platanoides 'Emerald Queen'
Emerald Queen Norway Maple, Norway Maple
Norway maple is a fast-growing deciduous shade tree native to Europe but naturalized in the United States and other areas. The cultivar 'Emerald Queen' has lush, glossy, dark green leaves that are purple-tinged when young. Fall color is yellow. The clustered yellow-green flowers – which are more abundant and conspicuous than those of many maples – are followed by winged brown seeds. This vigorous selection quickly forms an upright, oval-headed tree.
Norway maple is very tolerant of a wide range of sites and conditions but does best in locations with full sun to part shade and well-drained average soil. Its dense shade and roots and its penchant for prolific self-sowing make it a poor choice for gardens and natural areas. This tough and adaptable tree does well in urban settings.
