Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER rubrum 'Bowhall'

Plant Common Name

Northern Red Maple, Red Maple

General Description

A narrowly conical selection of one of the most widespread North American maples, 'Bowhall' was introduced by Scanlon Nursery of Ohio in 1951. It is often confused in commerce with the similar 'Scanlon', which originated as a cutting from 'Bowhall.' Said to be somewhat less dense and more irregular in habit than 'Scanlon,' 'Bowhall' has three-lobed or weakly five-lobed, mid-green leaves with paler undersides. The foliage turns bright orange in fall. Conspicuous red flowers appear in late winter and early spring, followed by two-winged, green fruits that mature to red-brown before dropping helicopter-style from the tree in late spring or early summer. Winter interest is provided by stark gray bark that is smooth in youth and scaly on older trees.

This tough, cold-hardy deciduous tree is adapted to a wide range of soils and topographies, including wet sites. Red maple grows best in locations with full to part sun and makes a great shade tree or street tree for urban or rural settings.
