The U.S. National Arboretum

Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER rubrum 'Brandywine'

Plant Common Name

Northern Red Maple, Red Maple

General Description

The seedless red maple 'Brandywine' has long-lasting brilliant red-purple fall color that can't be beat. This introduction of the United States National Arboretum is a tall, deciduous tree with an oval canopy and stark gray bark that looks attractive in the winter. It is seedless because, unlike other red maples, it only produces male flowers.

North American in origin, it is adapted to a wide range of soils and topographies, including wet sites. Red maple grows best in locations with full to part sun and makes a great shade tree or street tree for urban settings.
