Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER rubrum 'Fairview Flame'

Plant Common Name

Northern Red Maple, Red Maple

General Description

A selection of red maple, 'Fairview Flame'is a great shade tree for moist to wet soils and a great maple for vibrant fall color. From Eastern North American, this tall, deciduous tree has dark green leaves with five broad lobes and silvery undersides. The small flowers are red and appear in clusters before the leaves in early spring. They are pollinated by bees, resulting in doubled and two-winged seeds called samaras. By the onset of autumn, the leaves turn scarlet red. When young, the tree is pyramindal in shape, but matures to an upright oval form.

Like other red maples, 'Fairview Flame' is adapted to a wide range of soil types, including wet sites. Acidic soil tends to intensify the red fall colors. The tree grows best in locations with full to part sun. Since this species is known for having shallow and surface roots, avoid planting close to sidewalks. Supplemental irrigation is highly recommended in droughts, and avoid planting this cultivar sites with air pollution.
