Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER rubrum 'Magnificent Magenta'(BURGUNDY BELLE®) PP7222

Plant Common Name

Northern Red Maple, Red Maple

General Description

An outstanding red maple, 'Magnificent Magenta' is a compact tree with unique red-violet fall color. This deciduous tree has an oval canopy with no central leader and dark yellow-green leaves that turn dark magenta with purple undertones in autumn. The fall color lasts quite long, lingering past the first hard frosts when the leaves of other trees may have already dropped or browned. The red flowers cover the branches in early spring, attracting honeybees.

Burgundy Belle red maple is adapted to a wide range of soil types, including wet sites. Acidic soil tends to intensify the fall foliage coloring. Like all red maples, it grows best in locations with full to part sun. This selection makes an excellent specimen shade tree or street tree. Since this species is known for having shallow and surface roots, avoid planting close to sidewalks.
