Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER rubrum 'PNI 0268'(OCTOBER GLORY™)

Plant Common Name

Northern Red Maple, Red Maple

General Description

What a punch of color this tree offers in autumn! The high performing ‘October Glory’ has a rounded to oval-shaped canopy when mature. It was first introduced in the early 1960s and was once patented under the number PP2116.

This tall, deciduous tree produces tiny clusters of red-hued flowers along its branches in spring. These mature into red helicopter-like fruits called samaras. From spring to summer 'October Glory' offers glossy rich green leaves, which turn to vivid shades of orange-red in fall.

North American in origin, 'October Glory' is adapted to a wide range of soil types and topographies, including wet sites. Acid soil tends to intensify the red fall foliage color. Red maple grows best in locations with full to partial sun. It is widely planted, and makes a great shade tree or street tree for urban settings. Since this species is known for having dense surface roots, avoid planting too closely to sidewalks.

'October Glory' is less hardy than many red maples and does not fare well far north.
