Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER saccharum 'Legacy' PP4979

Plant Common Name

Legacy Sugar Maple, Sugar Maple

General Description

The patented sugar maple 'Legacy' has a distinctly uniform compact oval-shaped crown and thick glossy green leaves. It was discovered by Willet N. Wandell in his seedling beds at Duncan Nursery outside of Champaign, Illinois. This medium-sized hardy deciduous tree of eastern North America looks attractive all season and its lobed leaves change to red, orange or yellow in fall.

Sugar maples develop the best crown growth in full to partial sun and tolerate a wide range of soil types. They are not as adapted to stressful urban conditions as other maples but will fare well in city yards and parks with ample space for root growth. 'Legacy' is more vigorous and faster growing than the species but does not grow as large at maturity. Its glossy lobed leaves are also thicker and less apt to tatter and are especially good in hot summer regions. Fall color is more yellow in warmer regions that have a shorter, only slightly cool fall.
