Family

Aceraceae

Botanical Name

ACER tataricum ssp. ginnala 'Bailey Compact'

Plant Common Name

Amur Maple, Bailey Compact Amur Maple

General Description

A compact selection of Amur maple (which is native to southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia) 'Bailey Compact' is a dense, deciduous shrub with a dome shape formed by many radiating branches. Unusually hardy, it is a great selection for northern gardens. The leaves are glossy and light green. They turn scarlet and orange in the fall. In spring, 'Bailey Compact' bears clusters of cream-colored flowers that are followed by red, winged fruits.

This shrub demands average, well-drained soil and at least half a day of direct sun. Its size makes it useful for fall color in small yards. It can be planted as a specimen, a hedge, or a windbreak.
