Maple
General Description
The genus Acer is comprised of approximately 125 species of primarily deciduous trees and large shrubs, and literally thousands of hybrids and cultivated varieties. These have a broad native distribution and can be found throughout North America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
As a genus, maples may be characterized by opposite leaf arrangement, palmate or three-parted leaves and helicopter-like fruits called samaras. Maple sizes and habits are highly variable, and cultural requirements and uses are dependent on the species or variety.
In Latin, the name "Acer" means sharp, referring to their often pointed leaf apices, or tips.
