Achillea filipendulina 'Cloth of Gold'
Cloth of Gold Fernleaf Yarrow, Fernleaf Yarrow
Fernleaf yarrow is a tall, bold perennial originating from Europe and Asia which is valued for its lovely foliage and dense, flat-topped clusters of golden-yellow flowers in summer. The fragrant, fernlike leaves of ‘Cloth of Gold’ are light green and form a basal clump that spreads over time. In late spring to early summer it sends up tall, leafy stems topped with large, dense, flattened clusters of tiny golden yellow flowers, which may last as long as four weeks. Its flowers are great for cutting, and also attract butterflies.
As with most yarrows, ‘Cloth of Gold’ is tolerant of heat, limited drought and poor sandy soil. Still, it grows and flowers best in full sun and average soil with good drainage and regular moisture. It is unpalatable to deer, and its basal foliage will remain semi-evergreen in mild climates. The removal of spent flowers will help extend bloom time. Divide in spring or fall every few years to keep clumps manageable. This is a wonderful perennial for sunny gardens, especially those for cut flowers and butterflies. Its flowers also dry well and can be used in everlasting arrangements.
