Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ACHILLEA filipendulina

Plant Common Name

Fernleaf Yarrow

General Description

The tall, bold fernleaf yarrow has lovely foliage and summer flowers. It is a popular perennial that originates from Europe and Asia, but has naturalized across much of North America. Its fragrant, fernlike leaves are green or gray-green and form basal clumps that spread over time. In late spring to early summer it sends up tall, leafy stems topped with large, dense, flattened clusters of tiny golden yellow flowers, which may last as long as four weeks. Its flowers are great for cutting, and also attract butterflies. There are many wonderful cultivars in commerce, all of which are sun-loving and easy to grow.

Fernleaf yarrow is tolerant of heat, limited drought and poor sandy soil. Still, it grows and flowers best in full sun and average soil with good drainage and regular moisture. It is unpalatable to deer, and its basal foliage will remain semi-evergreen in mild climates. The removal of spent flowers will help extend bloom time. Divide in spring or fall every few years to keep clumps manageable. This is a wonderful perennial for sunny gardens, especially those for cut flowers and butterflies. Its flowers also dry well and can be used in everlasting arrangements.
