James H. Schutte

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ACHILLEA millefolium 'Fire King'

Plant Common Name

Common Yarrow, Fire King Yarrow

General Description

From early through midsummer, yarrow ‘Fire King’ displays many dense, flat-topped clusters of vibrant rose-red flowers with tiny yellow centers. These are borne on slender, sturdy stems which rise from vigorous clumps of bright green, ferny foliage. The brilliant blooms are irresistible to butterflies, and also make excellent cut flowers.

Common yarrow is a carefree, drought-tolerant species native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Easily grown in full to part sun and average, well-drained soil, it spreads enthusiastically and may require division every two to three years to keep it within bounds. Blooming is prolonged by regular removal of faded flower stems. This classic perennial is perfect for mixed borders, wildflower plantings or casual cottage-style gardens.
