Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ACHILLEA millefolium 'Red Velvet'

Plant Common Name

Common Yarrow, Red Velvet Common Yarrow

General Description

Bred in the Netherlands, yarrow ‘Red Velvet’ is considered by many to be one of the best red-flowered cultivars available. Its compact, sturdy stems are topped with extra large, flat-topped clusters of ruby red flowers that fade minimally with age. The vibrant blossoms appear from early through midsummer above spreading clumps of fine, ferny, aromatic foliage. They are beloved by butterflies, and also make fine cut flowers.

Common yarrow is a carefree, drought-tolerant species native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Easily grown in full to part sun and average, well-drained soil, it spreads enthusiastically and may require division every two to three years to keep it within bounds. Blooming is prolonged by regular removal of faded flower stems. This classic perennial is perfect for mixed borders, wildflower plantings or casual cottage-style gardens.
