ACHILLEA millefolium 'Summerwine'

Image of Achillea millefolium 'Summerwine'

James Burghardt

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ACHILLEA millefolium 'Summerwine'

Plant Common Name

Common Yarrow, Summerwine Common Yarrow

General Description

From early through midsummer, yarrow 'Summerwine' displays many large, flat-topped clusters of small, ruby-red flowers dotted with tiny white centers. The colorful blooms are held on strong, slender stems above low, spreading clumps of finely divided, aromatic, gray-green, foliage. They are attractive to butterflies, and also make lovely cut flowers.

Common yarrow is a carefree, drought-tolerant species native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Easily grown in full to part sun and average, well-drained soil, it spreads enthusiastically and may require division every two to three years to keep it within bounds. Blooming is prolonged by regular removal of faded flower stems. This classic perennial is perfect for mixed borders, wildflower plantings or casual cottage-style gardens.
