ACHILLEA millefolium 'The Beacon'

Image of Achillea millefolium 'The Beacon' ('Fanal')

James H. Schutte

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ACHILLEA millefolium 'The Beacon' ('Fanal')

Plant Common Name

Common Yarrow, Fanal Common Yarrow

General Description

Yarrow 'The Beacon' decorates the summer garden with many flat-topped clusters of deep red flowers with tiny yellow centers. Also sold under the name 'Fanal' forms a healthy clump of fine, ferny, green foliage which spreads more politely than that many yarrow cultivars. The dense, jewel-toned flower clusters bloom atop sturdy stems from early through midsummer, and are irresistible to butterflies.

This tough, easy-care perennial performs best in full sun and moist, reasonably fertile, well-drained soil, but will tolerate dry conditions and light shade. Blooming may be prolonged by regular removal of faded flower stems. If necessary, divide plants every two to three years in spring or fall. Ideal for mixed borders and casual cottage-style gardens, its bright blooms also make excellent cut flowers.
