Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ACHILLEA ptarmica 'Nana Compacta'

Plant Common Name

Dwarf Sneezeweed, Sneezewort

General Description

This is a hardy, compact, long-flowering selection of sneezeweed. It blooms with many loose clusters of small gray-white flowers on wayward stems. Thankfully, it is less rambunctious than its larger kin, so it is a good choice for small spaces.

Sneezeweed is a vigorous, spreading, herbaceous perennial, native to northern Europe, southwest Romania, and eastward to Siberia. It has naturalized in North America where it grows in moist meadows.

In spring it forms vigorous clumps of linear dark green leaves that emit a strong scent when crushed. They give rise to short leafy stems topped with loose clusters of off white daisy-like blooms. Regular deadheading encourages more flowering.

Sneezeweed is a meadow plant in the wild, so it prefers full to partial sun and average fertile soil with even moisture. It will even tolerate clay-rich soil. Over time, its clumps will spread, so it needs dividing every few years to keep it tidy and in bounds.

Plant this easy perennial in sunny informal gardens. Though short-stemmed, its flowers are long-lasting when cut and look pretty as filler to larger blooms.
