General Description

Sneezeweed is a vigorous, spreading, herbaceous perennial, native to northern Europe, southwest Romania, and eastward to Siberia. It has naturalized in North America where it grows in moist meadows.

In spring it forms vigorous clumps of linear dark green leaves that emit a strong scent when crushed. They give rise to tall leafy stems topped with loose clusters of white daisy-like blooms. Regular deadheading encourages more flowering.

Sneezeweed is a meadow plant in the wild, so it prefers full to partial sun and average fertile soil with even moisture. It will even tolerate clay-rich soil. Over time, its clumps will spread, so it needs dividing every few years to keep it tidy and in bounds.

Plant this easy perennial in sunny informal gardens. Its flowers are long-lasting when cut and look pretty as filler to larger blooms. Notable cultivars include two double-flowered selections, the compact cultivar ‘The Pearl’ and the even shorter ‘Boule de Neige.’
