Carmichael's Monkshood
Autumn flowered monkshood is a tuberous-rooted perennial originally from China and valued for its late season bloom. The leaves are produced in mounds and are delphinium-like, dark green, deeply dissected, toothed and have a leathery texture. Deep blue-violet flowers, each curiously shaped like a helmet or hood are produced atop leafy, tall, stately spikes in late summer and fall.
Plant monkshood in evenly moist but not wet soil. Full sun to partly shady locations are preferred. Monkshood grows best in zones with cool nights and appreciates some afternoon shade in warmer areas. Propagation is by seed or division, though monkshood can be slow to establish if disturbed. Cut back spent flower stalks to encourage new blooms. Monkshood blooms are a delight in fall gardens, use in areas where moistures is adequate, woodland gardens, along streams or ponds and in borders.
Avoid planting monkshood near where children play, contamination of veggie gardens is possible and incidental contact can occur. Gloves are recommended when working with monkshood.
