ADIANTUM aleuticum 'Imbricatum'

Image of Adiantum aleuticum 'Imbricatum'

Family

Pteridaceae

Botanical Name

ADIANTUM aleuticum 'Imbricatum'

Plant Common Name

Aleutian Maidenhair

General Description

Deceptively delicate in appearance but tough in constitution, Aleutian maidenhair is a deciduous fern found over a wide area of western North America and eastern Asia, with scattered populations in the eastern United States. The cultivar 'Imbricatum' is a dwarf selection with ruffled feathery blue-green "branches" (pinnae). Several pinnae with triangular wavy-edged leaf-like segments arise from a curving "stem" (rachis), the whole forming a lacy fan-like frond that nearly parallels the ground. The rachis is deep black-purple, in striking contrast to the foliage. Plants spread slowly by slender underground rhizomes, eventually forming a lush clump.

This beautiful fern does best in moist, humus-rich soil and partial shade. Dry hot conditions will cause leaf scorch. Use it in the shade garden with other woodland natives such as trilliums and Phlox stolonifera. Or plant as a specimen in a shade-dappled rock garden or nook.
