Family

Bromeliaceae

Botanical Name

AECHMEA eurycorymbus

Plant Common Name

Aechmea, Bromeliad, Giant Aechmea

General Description

A large terrestrial or epiphytic bromeliad for the tropical landscape, Aechmea eurycorymbus has handsome evergreen foliage and stunning summer flowers. A frost-tender perennial from northeastern Brazil, it forms a bold upright rosette of long, rigid, strappy leaves, with the leaf bases forming a water-collecting "cup" at the plant's center. The spine-edged leaves are light green with flushes of variable light yellow and red when grown in sun. In the heat of summer, mature plants may produce a sturdy, tall, branched flower stalk. The orange stalk bears relatively widely spaced yellow bracts along its branches. The flower stalk remains for several months, with yellow fruits following the flowers. The rosette dies back slowly after flowering, to be replaced by "pup" plants that sprout at its base.

Grow this large aechmea in a moist, warm, well drained soil. Its leaves will be most colorful if given at least partial sun. Ensure the leaf bases are filled with water, especially in the intense heat and sunlight of summer. Plant in a soil with good drainage or wedge between boulders out of soil in a mixed border or tropical rockery. The sheer size of this plant makes an impressive clump, so do not use it as a houseplant!
