General Description
Easy to grow, this shrubby evergreen from the Canary Islands is prized for its handsome succulent foliage. It bears rosettes of fleshy light green spade-shaped leaves at the tips of branching knee-high stems, with new growth appearing in late fall and early winter. The leaves often have red-tinted margins. Where stems contact soil they will root, developing ever larger mounds with time. In spring, each rosette puts forth a large, single flower stalk topped with creamy yellow blossoms. The rosette dies after flowering.
This attractive and easy to grow succulent works well as a potted plant for the home or greenhouse, or as a garden subject in areas with mild winters. It prefers full sun and dryish soil, requiring partial shade in areas with hot summers. It dislikes hot humid conditions. Stems should be cut back after flowering, or when the plant becomes leggy. Propagate plants from stem cuttings in late winter or early spring.
