General Description
New for 2009, Summer glow agastache is irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. Introduced by Terra Nova Nurseries, this upright, clump-forming herbaceous perennial produces long dense spikes of large, soft yellow, tubular flowers. Each is nestled in a showy reddish calyx that persists after the petals fall. It begins blooming in the heat of midsummer and will continue up until frost if regularly deadheaded. Like most members of the mint family, it has fragrant foliage, which smells of anise when crushed.
Full sun is required for best flowering and good performance. 'Summer Glow' can be grown in average to dry garden soil, but a well-draining, fertile, alkaline loam will allow it to reach its best. Beware wet, heavy clay soils as these will cause plants to rot, particularly in wet winter weather. Keep spent blooms trimmed to prevent reseeding or leave them on for the goldfinch to enjoy.. This is an ideal plant for any sunny perennial border, wildflower or butterfly garden.
