Family

Lamiaceae

Botanical Name

AJUGA reptans 'Variegata'

Plant Common Name

Common Bugleweed

General Description

Variegated common bugleweed is an evergreen to semi-evergreen, perennial groundcover with glossy green leaves lined and blotched with ivory. This shade-loving plant is European in origin and spreads by stolons to form a dense carpet of showy vegetation. Spikes of dark violet-blue flowers appear in late spring and early summer.

Common bugleweed tolerates poor soils but performs best in those that are evenly moist, well-drained and contain organic matter. Protect plants from hot, glaring sun, especially in the afternoon, as it may cause leaves to become damaged and turn brown. Divide plantings every three to five years to prevent overcrowding and possible disease problems.

Variegated forms of common bugleweed don't spread as fast as green-leaved forms and are more sensitive to direct sun. The leaves also tend to revert to green over time. Still, 'Variegata' is attractive in its own right and blends well with ferns, hostas and other colorful foliar plants for shade.
