Happy Lights Hollyhock, Hollyhock
The tall, bold hollyhocks in Happy Lights Mix are rust-resistant and very showy. These hybrids are short-lived perennials that bloom for weeks in summer. The plants bear strong, upright, leafy flower stalks lined with showy single to semi-double flowers, which rise from coarse rosettes of leaves. Their large blooms are either white, red, pink, yellow, reddish black or orange and attract bees.
Hollyhocks thrive in full sun and fertile soil with good drainage. They grow best with average water and light seasonal fertilization. They are quite tall and often need to be staked, especially if planted in partial sun. Cutting off spent flower spikes can encourage a second flowering in late summer. Japanese beetles attack hollyhocks with ferocity, so keep a look out for these pesky insects. Pyrethrum sprays are effective on them if the insects are sprayed directly.
Happy Lights hollyhocks are ideal for old-fashioned cottage gardens and mixed borders. They are pretty, but short-lived cutflowers and add interest and height to children's gardens.
