Botanical Name

ALLAMANDA schottii

Plant Common Name

Golden Trumpet Bush

General Description

The heat-loving golden trumpet bush, also called dwarf allamanda, is a beautiful, compact shrub that is covered in bright yellow flowers all year around. Brazilian in origin, Allamanda schottii is a tropical evergreen that is popular plant for beds, borders, hedges and large containers.

Bright green to yellow-green leaves cover this shrub throughout the year. These are opposite to one another, and broadly elliptical in shape. The woody branches are covered with brown, furrowed bark and the new stems are yellow-green and slightly fuzzy. The foliage and stems emit a milky sap when broken that is irritating to the skin. Clusters of large, trumpet-shaped flowers of golden yellow appear indeterminately as long as growing conditions are favorable. The blooms may develop red or orange highlights and are followed by spiny seed capsules.

This tropical shrub prefers full sun and well-drained soil that is on the acid side. Though somewhat drought tolerant, golden trumpet bush looks best if given regular water. It is a heavy feeder and easily develops nutrient deficiency symptoms, such as leaf yellowing, if not fertilized regularly with a product containing micro-elements. Golden trumpet bush is frost sensitive. Where not hardy, it can be grown as a large container specimen that can be moved to a protected location in winter. Allamanda is an easy to grow shrub that will impart a tropical feeling to any frost-free garden.

Plants may become invasive where hardy.
