Allium 'Mont Blanc'
Mont Blanc Ornamental Onion, Ornamental Onion
This refined hybrid ornamental onion graces the late spring perennial border with globes of starry, shimmering white blossoms displayed on tall, slender stems. The baseball-sized flower clusters rise above strappy, deep green basal leaves that appear in spring and fade as the flowers emerge.
In autumn, plant the bulbs of ‘Mont Blanc’ in fertile, well-drained soil at a depth of two to three times their diameter. Full sun is essential for best flowering, and drier summer soil conditions are preferable. Plant singly or in small groups among the foliage of other plants in order to mask the dying foliage at the base of the stems. Lift and divide the bulbs only if they become crowded.
Give this dramatic perennial a starring role in the mixed border, or use it to dress up the vegetable garden. Bulbous alliums such as this are especially lovely combined with other late spring bloomers such as Siberian iris, peonies, roses, and meadow sage. They also make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers, and add punch to both fresh and dried flower arrangements.
