Allium 'Pink Feathers'
Ornamental Onion, Pink Feathers Ornamental Onion
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
A summer-blooming ornamental onion, 'Pink Feathers' bears wispy clusters of pale pink-lavender blossoms. This hybrid perennial grows from bulbs that slowly reproduce to create a clump. Each bulb produces slender, light green leaves that may slightly twist. The leaves look resemble a wispy rosette. The rounded flower clusters comprise hundreds of tiny six-petaled flowers that are visited by bees and butterflies. No or few seeds result from pollination, making 'Pink Feathers' less of a spreading weed in gardens that other ornamental onions. Flowering continues from midsummer for several weeks on larger plants, especially if old flower stems are promptly pruned from the plant. Full sun is essential for best flowering, and drier summer soil conditions are preferable. A well-drained soil of average fertility and decent drainage suffices. Irrigate if needed to prevent hot, bone dry soil prior to and during the flowering display. Lift and divide the bulbs only if they become crowded.
Give 'Pink Feathers' a starring role in the mixed border or rockery, or use it to dress up the vegetable garden. It grows slowly into a tidy clump after several years. The blossoms make excellent long-lasting cut flowers, adding beauty to both fresh and dried flower arrangements.
