ALOCASIA reginula

Forest & Kim Starr

Family

Araceae

Botanical Name

ALOCASIA reginula

Plant Common Name

Elephant Ear

General Description

Borne along a short stout creamy white stem, the broad oval stiff-textured leaves are velvety dark green with sunken, silver veins and purple undersides. They have two prominent rounded lobes at their base. The ivory white leaf stalks attach to the interior rather than the edge of the leaf blades. Small anthurium-like blooms on short stalks appear sporadically in the leaf axils. They consist of a finger-like floral column (spadix) surrounded by a white petal-like leaf (spathe). This plant is self-sterile, producing no seed unless pollinated by another Alocasia species. Plants spread slowly to form modest clumps.

This frost-tender perennial thrives in locations with partial to full shade and organic, well drained soil. It needs less moisture than most other alocasias, and will fail if over-watered. Where not hardy it is a stunning container plant, doing best in moderate light and well-drained humus-rich soil. Plant Alocasia for their beautiful leaves and the tropical effects they impart.
