Botanical Name
ALSTROEMERIA aurea 'Orange King'
Plant Common Name
Lily-of-the-Incas, Orange King Peruvian-lily, Peruvian-lily
General Description
Originating from the montane regions of Chile and Argentina, 'Orange King' Peruvian lily is an herbaceous perennial that spreads by rhizomatous tubers. It has upright stems lined with waxy, slightly wavy, lance-shaped leaves of green to gray-green. From mid to late summer many clusters of large, deep orange, lily-like flowers appear. These have delicate brown spots along their throats and are attractive to hummingbirds. After blooming foliage will die back.
Peruvian lily grows best in areas where summers are cool and moist. It thrives in full to part sun and rich soil that is well drained. Its flowers look beautiful in mixed perennial borders and are great for cutting. Established plants require division every two to three years.
