ANEMONE coronaria

Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

ANEMONE coronaria

Plant Common Name

Crown Windflower, Lilies-of-the-Field, Poppy-flowered Anemone

General Description

Native to the Mediterranean, this tender, often short-lived perennial bears showy, poppy-like flowers in late winter, early spring, or a few months after its bumpy tubers are planted. Poised on slender stalks above clumps of divided, ferny leaves, the solitary flowers have five to eight scarlet, blue, pink, white, or multicolored segments with a large, usually dark central disc. Often planted at intervals to provide continual year-round bloom in greenhouses or mild climates, poppy-flowered anemone can also be used as an early-blooming garden perennial where hardy. Numerous cultivars and hybrids in various colors are available. Some are double-flowered.

Happiest in a site shaded from hot sun, Anemone coronoria prefers rich, loamy soil, even moisture, and a dry rest after bloom. Plant the tubers shallowly in early spring, or almost any time of year where they are hardy. The leaves die back after bloom, so give this plant companions that leaf out later and fill the void (e.g., hardy geraniums). This is a good plant for texture and color in a container, a moist woodland, or a rock garden. The flowers are excellent for cutting.
