General Description
Deepest magenta pink flowers grace the branches of 'Hadspen Abundance' in late summer or fall. This exceptional cultivar was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit due to its consistently good garden performance and profuse glowing flowers.
Producing a wealth of saucer-shaped blooms in late-summer or fall, Chinese anemone is best known in gardens by its colorful hybrids and the double-flowered variety japonica. This late-blooming herbaceous perennial is native to China. In the wild, populations inhabit grasslands, streamsides and scrub in hilly regions. The plants form clumps that spread over time via rhizomes, sometimes invasively.
The attractive compound leaves are rich green, fuzzy and comprised of three to five ternate leaflets with jagged lobes and toothed edges. They are supported by equally fuzzy branched petioles. Flowering occurs from late summer to fall. Tall, wiry, branched flower stems give rise to clusters of bulbous buds that open to show saucer-shaped purple, pink, or white flowers. Each bloom has five to more than 20 sepal-like petals. A crown of golden stamens punctuates the lightly scented blooms which attract both bees and butterflies. The fruits are hairy achenes that ripen by winter and float away in the wind.
This beautiful perennial grows best in well-drained soil and partial shade. It spreads vigorously in fertile, moist, humus-rich soil. Use it in mixed borders or along a woodland edge. In smaller garden spaces, the spreading plants may need to be divided regularly in spring or fall. The flowers are excellent for cutting and look beautiful arranged with long-stemmed mums and goldenrod.
